Our Community

Latest News

Liveable Moonee Valley is a community group united by a shared passion for preserving and enhancing the unique character of the Moonee Valley area. Our members come from all walks of life—working professionals, retirees, parents, young people, tradespeople, and individuals of diverse political views—reflecting the vibrant fabric of our community. We cherish the streetscapes, green spaces, playgrounds, and bustling hubs like Keilor Road and Puckle Street that make our area a special place to live. While we support thoughtful urban development and recognize the need for increased housing density, we are deeply concerned about the Victorian Government's 2024 Housing Plan. We advocate for responsible development that respects our heritage, streetscapes, and community values. Our mission is to ensure that changes to planning standards involve genuine stakeholder consultation, balancing progress with the protection of what makes Moonee Valley a great place to call home.

Who is Liveable Moonee Valley

Liveable Moonee Valley's concerns reflect a broader debate in Victoria about the balance between increasing housing supply and preserving community character. There are many issues with the planning reforms not least of which is the failure to consult stakeholders, a lack of transparency and failure to publicly release infrastructure planning reports that underpin the decision. Focusing on tangible aspects of the proposed planning reforms, we object to:

  1. Building Heights: We believe that the introduction of six-story buildings in areas dominated by single-story homes is inappropriate and advocate for a gradual transition in building heights as development moves away from activity centres.

  2. Setbacks and Overshadowing Standards: The proposal to reduce setbacks and relax overshadowing requirements has raised concerns about the impact on neighbouring properties and the character of established neighbourhoods.

  3. Parking: Liveable Moonee Valley opposes any reduction in parking requirements that must be provided as part of any development.

  4. The removal of local council oversight. These changes undermine community engagement and potentially lead to development that does not meet local needs.

  5. Deemed-to-Comply Provisions: The introduction of these provisions, which streamline approval for certain types of developments, is seen as bypassing essential planning scrutiny that ensures developments align with community expectations.
